Workers of the DeVitt Company mingle with the. Storeowners, farmers, blacksmiths and barkeeps all go about their daily business. Nestled between the peaks of the Colorado Rockies lies the small town of Flagstone. It doesn't take long for trouble to arrive. John Cooper has come to Flagstone to meet an old friend. I was lucky enough to be invited to E3 last year, and the very first game I got to test behind the scenes with was Desperados III. Troublemakers in Flagstone (aka Flagstone) is the third mission of Desperados III. In my preview article I was extremely impressed with it, so when the chance come along to play the final build, I most certainly jumped on the chance. The “tactics” genre has seen some pretty good support lately with games like Gears Tactics, XCOM 2 Collection for Switch, XCOM: Chimera Squad, and Space Hulk: Tactics. So where does Desperados III fit within these well received tactics titles? I’m glad to say that my initial impressions were spot on and Desperados III belongs at the top. There is a difference between the games I mentioned above and Desperados III. They’re all turn-based tactics games, while Desperados III is real-time. This means you don’t need to worry about action points or wait for your opponents to make their move. You’ll need to use all of your skills, allies, and moves to set up attacks or distractions to take out your enemies. You’ll need to pay attention to vision cones, patrol patterns, and various enemy types all at the same time before making your move.Įverything about Hector’s intro and character is amazing. Speedrun: Complete the mission in under 7:00 p.m. Use Showdown Mode to schedule a simultaneous attack, then just wait for Wild Marge to start drinking their whiskey. Like most tactics games, the gameplay is where Desperados III shines, but there is a nice story and character set up. Once you've got enough people not to get caught, poison the whiskey cask and then have each character run towards a different target. In fact, some of your ally characters are amazing and they all have their own personality and skills. Desperados III sets you up on a revenge path where you play as John Cooper, trying to get revenge for his father after a notorious outlaw kills him. This is about all the setup that is provided, but it is enough to get you going. What keeps you going isn’t just Cooper’s story, but all the great characters you run into and recruit to your gang along the way. The presentation I was shown of Desperados III covered one level using two of the five games characters: Cooper and Hector. It’s hard to make a decision on my favorite character in the entire game, as they all have great moves and personality. Much like with Shadow Tactics, Desperados III looks to be taking on a generally more stylistic approach aesthetically. This I can't complain about, Shadow Tactics was simply beautiful and this looks to continue that trend. Naturally, the setting being in the Wild West doesn't allow for a wider colour palette, but what is there still has a great attention to detail. Where Mimimi looks to have excelled is having you think about using a combination of these characters. For example, you'll want to use Cooper to whistle and lure an enemy around a corner, right into the huge bear trap that Hector set. That, or you can lure an enemy, circle around something that offers you cover and throw your knife right into their back. It uses the same visual and audio detection system as standard for the genre. The enemy line of sight is divided into a core and a secondary area. In the core area, you'll be seen regardless of your stance unless hiding in some shrubbery or behind something. The secondary area, you can simply crouch and move to avoid being seen. Any actions you take will also have a level of sound they emit, which is clearly marked with a circle around the area. Of course, this can be used to your advantage to lure others away. What will undoubtedly help the game is the fact that Mimimi looks to have put a high level of detail into the missions. Normally in a tactical game like this, you would find yourself challenged more by the path you have taken to the target, not necessarily how you take the target out. Desperados III looks to have a dash of Hitman here. I was told about how you'll have more freedom to use the environment and setting to your advantage. It's the exploration that will be really rewarded.
